THE MATERIALS OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM

The materials on display go from the 6th millennium B.C. (5548 according to the Obsidian Hydratation Dating) to the High Middle Ages (VI - VII century A.D.). They consist of daily tools from prehistoric times, as stone weapons; there are also objects linked to the burial and the religious rituals of the Neolithic cultures (5500 - 2500 B.C.) and the Early Metal Ages (2500 - 1800 B.C.) till the witnesses of the Nuragic Age (1500 - 510 B.C.).
The main nucleus of these materials consists of the burial equipments, compost by vessels and jewels, from the Phoenician and Punic necropolises of Monte Sirai. It is very interesting the partial reconstruction of the tofet, a burial place and a sanctuary for children, with the original urns and stelae.
The two private collections, given respectively by the heirs of Prof. Doneddu and Vittorio Pispisa, sum up the millennia of the prehistory and history of Sulcis: the first is representative, above all, of the Calcolithic Age, the other stores important witnessing of the Nuragic Age and the Phoenician and Punic period. They both provided the visitors with materials from the Roman period till the dawn of the Middle Ages.
